Best Time to Climb

The best times to visit Kilimanjaro are during the dry seasons from late December to early March and mid-June to late October. These months feature mostly clear, pleasant weather ideal for trekking. Although rain may occur outside these periods, it typically falls in the afternoons, leaving most of the day dry and suitable for climbing and enjoying the views.

How to Prepare and Train

You don’t need to be an athlete, but you should comfortably run 5 km (3 miles) and hike 10 km (6 miles) daily. Good preparation includes regular swimming, cycling, running, or walking. Training boosts your endurance and muscle strength, helping your body handle Kilimanjaro’s tough, long uphill trek with better stamina and less fatigue during the climb to the summit.

Staying Safe on the Mountain

The main danger on Kilimanjaro is altitude sickness caused by gaining height too quickly. To prevent this, choose a trek lasting 7 days or more, drink plenty of water, and walk slowly—“pole pole” (slowly) is key. Ensure your guides are trained for emergencies, as they know how to manage altitude sickness and evacuations to keep you safe.

Popular Routes

The Machame Route, called the "Whiskey Route," is Kilimanjaro’s most scenic and popular path. It features diverse landscapes: rainforests, moorlands, alpine deserts, rocky ridges, and glaciers. The route covers about 62–64 kilometers, and the 7-day option gives trekkers better chances for altitude acclimatization, improving summit success. Wildlife like monkeys and birds can be spotted on the lower slopes, with amazing views as you climb higher.

The Lemosho Route on Kilimanjaro is famous for panoramic views and a scenic, less-crowded path. It begins on the mountain’s western side, passing through lush rainforests, open moorlands, and eventually alpine deserts before reaching the summit. Lemosho is ideal for gradual acclimatization, with 6- to 8-day treks available, improving your chances for a safe and successful climb. The route joins the Machame trail above the Shira Plateau.

The Marangu Route, often called the "Coca-Cola Route," is Kilimanjaro’s oldest and one of the most popular trails. Known for its hut accommodations instead of tents, it’s a comfortable and well-established path. The trek is the shortest, lasting 5-6 days, making altitude acclimatization more difficult. The route is filled with rainforest and moorland scenery but is less varied than others

The Rongai Route is the only Kilimanjaro path approaching from the north, near the Kenyan border. It’s a quieter, less-traveled route known for lower rainfall, making it excellent for the rainy season. The trek runs through wild, remote landscapes with chances to see wildlife. Routes take 6 or 7 days, allowing gradual elevation gains for altitude adjustment and a high success rate for summiting.

The Umbwe Route is Kilimanjaro’s steepest and toughest trail, best suited for very fit and experienced climbers. It’s direct, physically demanding, and gains altitude rapidly, making acclimatization challenging. The route is less crowded and offers a wild, scenic trek through rainforests and rocky ridges. Umbwe typically takes 6 or 7 days, and only well-prepared trekkers should attempt this climb

The Northern Circuit Route is Kilimanjaro’s longest and newest trail, taking about 8 or 9 days and stretching nearly 88–96 km. Known for its peaceful, rarely traveled paths, it circles around the mountain’s northern slopes, offering panoramic scenery and great wildlife viewing. The extended route allows for excellent altitude acclimatization and boasts one of the highest summit success rates, making it ideal for those seeking a quiet adventure.
